The huge advantage of fitted cloth diapers is that you
can use a large variety of covers, such as wool, fleece, or PUL, or you
can use them with no cover at all if you want. Some people don't use
covers at home, especially if they are trying to clear up a rash or if
it is very hot..
Fitted cloth diapers are next step up in the evolution
of the cloth diaper from the simple flat diapers or prefold that were
the norm many years ago.
They are exactly what they sound like...

Instead of the flat and shapeless diapers our parents may
have used, fitted cloth diapers are fitted and snug, usually with elastic
gatherings in the legs and waist, making them a perfect fit for any baby.
Let’s see the advantages of fitted cloth diapers:
-
Fitted and snug for a good fit on baby and under
diaper covers
-
Can be washed at high temperatures, separate from covers
-
Easy to clean
-
Can be very trim for day use or bulkier for night time
use...your choice
-
Available in lots of cute colors and prints
Disadvantages of fitted cloth diapers:
-
Most of the time a cover is required to make the diaper
function
-
Not as convenient as an AIO (all-in-one)
-
Can be hard to wash or have smell problems if there are too many layers
Fitted cloth diapers have elastic around the waist and
thighs that allows for a snug, custom fit that won't let anything
escape. Most of them have an easy, user-friendly closure like snaps or Aplix (same as Velcro, just a different brand).
The fitted cloth diapers without closures are more
appropriately called "contour diapers" because are contoured to fit your
baby, but don't always have elasticized legs and waist.
The advantage to the contour diaper is that your fit is
not restricted by the closure- you can pull the diaper as snug or loose
as you like, fasten with pins or a Snappi diaper fastener, without
worrying about being in-between snaps or not having enough aplix to get
the diaper snug enough (or running out of aplix when your baby is
outgrowing the diaper).
Choosing fabrics:
You also have a choice of fabrics when selecting fitted cloth diapers.
Hemp and organic cotton should be your top choices. Hemp is more
absorbent than cotton, has longer, denser fibers, and will hold up
better over years of cloth diapering.
Hemp is also an environmentally friendly choice, as it
requires no pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides to grow. Hemp fitted
cloth diapers are also naturally antibacterial and antifungal, and work
to prevent diaper rash and yeast infections.
